The various sites
are all located in rural sections of Alabama. The sites all contained free
product with varying degrees of soil and groundwater contamination. Most of
the sites also contained both gasoline and diesel contaminants. Several sites
had significant off-site contamination and sensitive receptors that required
strict containment of pollutants.
Soil and groundwater investigations were conducted beginning in the early
1990s. Following review of the site investigations by the Alabama Department
of Environmental Management (ADEM), pilot studies were conducted to establish
viable remedial alternatives.
Mr. Lloyd was contacted by the Huntsville, Alabama office of QORE, Inc. to
review site data and the pilot study results. From the data provided, Mr.
Lloyd then designed several new remedial systems and made suggestions to revise
the existing systems already in place. Due to the complexity of the fate and
transport of contaminants, multiple technologies and combination of technologies
were reviewed. Remedial technologies reviewed include air sparging, soil vapor
extraction, granular activated carbon, dual phase extraction (DPE), monitored
natural attenuation (MNA), and overexcavation along with free product recovery.
The final systems installed were mounted on trailers to allow mobility since
the sites continued their operations and usable space was a large concern.
